A Guide to the 2025 New Moon in Cancer: Coming Back Home to a Greater Sense of Safety
Everything you need to move through this powerful lunation, with New Moon guidance and astro-herbal care for the Summer Season
Most of us don’t remember our time in the womb, yet it may have been the very first moment we experienced the soft, yet fierce protective energy of Cancer.
Some part of you still remembers those deep, embalming oceanic waves. After all, it’s a fact of nature: we all come from water.
That same primal, ancestral memory is awakened under this upcoming New Moon in Cancer, arriving on June 25, 2025, at 6:31 AM EDT.
This moon reminds us, through the ancient, primordial waters that make up our very body, that safety is a birthright. There is no true care without it. And beneath this dark, fertile sky, empathy becomes a superpower.

Cancer: More Than Just Emotional
With the New Moon blanketing the night sky in Cancer, em-oceans are indeed running high. But there’s so much more to Cancer energy than what pop astrology often reduces it to, which is a caricature of moodiness or hypersensitivity.
I’m reminded of the early 2000s film Bedazzled, where Brendan Fraser plays Elliot, a lovable nerd who makes a deal with the Devil—played by a stunningly seductive Elizabeth Hurley. She grants him seven wishes, and in one of them, he asks to become “the most sensitive man in the world” to win over his dream girl.
You should definitely look up the clip, but in short, Elliot becomes hilariously overwhelmed by his own emotions, weeping uncontrollably at the beauty of a sunset (which, same). It’s a parody of emotionality, exaggerated to absurd proportions.
Unfortunately, this is often how Cancer gets portrayed: all tears, no depth. And just too damn sensitive.
But true Cancer energy is far more nuanced than the tropes. It’s the wisdom of emotional intelligence. The courage to feel deeply and love wholly. The ability to nourish and protect with fierce devotion.
Crabs have a hard shell, soft flesh, and pincers for a reason.
Cancer reminds us that water was the first to hold us, that it has always welcomed us into its life-giving embrace.
With this New Moon rising in Cancer, the Moon is in her domicile, AKA her home sign. Here, she is most at ease. A planet in its domicile is like you in your own home: you know where everything is, and you don’t have to change your personality to feel safe.
The Moon feels at home in Cancer, and when she’s at ease, we feel it too. Especially in the emotional realm, where both Cancer and the Moon have deep roots.
Now is a fertile moment to connect with your inner nurturer and protector. To re-imagine what safety, softness, and emotional sovereignty mean to you.
Sun + Moon Conjunct an Exalted Jupiter in Cancer
A New Moon happens when the Sun and Moon meet in the sky, conjunct within just a few degrees of one another. In this case, the Sun and Moon are kissing in Cancer. It’s a moment of renewal, a reset, where the conscious (Sun) and subconscious (Moon) come together and begin a new monthly cycle.
And again since the Moon is in her domicile (her home sign) she’s deeply at ease here. Cancer is where the Moon feels safest, softest, and most herself.
But this lunation comes with an added bonus: Jupiter has just moved into Cancer too. And not only that—he’s exalted in this sign, which means this is one of the places he feels the most powerful. In Cancer, Jupiter’s expansive, generous nature thrives. His energy becomes deeply nurturing, emotionally wise, and incredibly protective.
You’ve probably heard the phrase where Jupiter goes, things grow. And here in Cancer, what’s growing is your emotional intelligence, your sense of safety and trust, and your capacity to care for yourself and others with greater depth.
With the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter all gathered in Cancer, we’re looking at a triple blessing. This is a beautiful moment to bridge what you feel, what you need, and what you’re ready to grow into. This is the place where needs and desires may finally start speaking the same language.
Because with Jupiter amplifying this New Moon, your capacity to trust, set boundaries, and feel truly at home within yourself is getting a cosmic boost.
Cancer Season’s Cooling Antidote
As the season heats up, so do our bodies but not always in ways that feel good. Maybe you’ve noticed your skin feeling dry, flakey, and extra irritated, your sleep feeling off, your more constipated than usual, or maybe your emotions are running on high on edge.
That’s not just you.
In many holistic systems, summer heat can stir and dry both the physical and emotional waters, bringing inflammation, restlessness, and reactivity to the surface for example, from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective Summer is the most Yang leaning season of the bunch characterized by the most output of energy, physicality, and of course, heat.
And it makes sense as Summer is where many of us are the most active or the busiest seasonally which is a total opposite to Winter, the most Yin/reflective and slow moving of the seasons. All this to say, our inner landscapes start to mirror the external ones.
So how do we beat the dry Summer heat?
Ruled by the Moon, Cancer teaches us how to cool, soften, and restore. In Medical Astrology, Cancer governs the breast, stomach, and mucous membranes—our inner linings of nourishment and protection, while the Moon oversees the fluids of the body, emotional rhythms, as well as cycles of repair and rest.
Together, they guide us toward hydration, gentleness, and the replenishment of what has been scorched.
So when we work with Moon-ruled herbs, we’re calling in support that is cooling, moistening, and usually subtly sweet. (And by sweet, I don’t mean sugary like cupcakes—I mean the soft sweetness of a cooked root vegetable, think sweet potatoes. That taste often signals the presence of nourishing carbohydrates and speaks to an herb’s ability to rebuild and restore overworked and overheated tissues.)
Lunar herbs often have a special relationship with the body’s mucous membranes. They regulate fluids, calm irritation, and bring moisture to dryness. These are your herbal allies for staying balanced and hydrated through the peak of summer.
Want to know one of my absolute favorite Lunar-ruled herbs? Let me introduce you to Marshmallow Root—yes, the same root that flavored the original marshmallow confections, long before synthetic sugars took over (shoutout to the ancient Egyptians).
Marshmallow Root: A Quintessential Lunar Herb
Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is a premier demulcent: an herb rich in mucilaginous compounds that soothe and hydrate dry, inflamed tissues. It’s especially helpful for those experiencing heat-driven symptoms or chronic dryness.
These mucilaginous polysaccharides coat + calm the delicate membranes that line your respiratory tract, digestive system, and urinary pathways. These slippery, moist tissues are your first line of defense helping to shield the body from irritation, pathogens, and stress.
With her silvery leaves, delicate pink flowers, and deeply lunar temperament, Marshmallow Root brings moisture where there’s dryness, softness where there’s inflammation, and restoration where depletion has taken root.
Precautions: Marshmallow is generally considered safe, but it can interact with certain medications. Because it forms a protective coating along the stomach lining, it may affect how other substances are absorbed by the body. To avoid interactions, it’s best to take Marshmallow a few hours before or after taking medications.
A Cooling, Soothing Tea for Summer Stress + Dryness
Feeling dried out, inflamed, constipated, or emotionally on edge? This simple tea is a gentle remedy—perfect for hot days, hot moods, and hot digestion.
Made with Marshmallow Root, a moistening, calming herb ruled by the Moon, this tea helps:
Hydrate deep tissues (think: skin, gut, throat, bladder)
Soothe irritation from heat, inflammation, or stress
Bring emotional softness + internal calm
How to Make It (Cold Infusion)
Cold-steeping keeps the soothing, slippery compounds intact and because Marshmallow root is so high in starches and mucilagenous polysaccharides heat would degrade these amazing properties making them less bio-available.
So cold-infusion is always the way to go with this herb.
You’ll need:
1–2 tbsp dried marshmallow root
1 quart room-temp water
Optional: a pinch of mint, rose, or lemon balm for taste
Steps:
Add herbs + water to a clean mason jar
Cover and steep overnight (or 4–8 hours)
Strain + sip throughout the day
This tea is cooling, hydrating, and gently calming. Especially lovely during Cancer Season when emotions and heat both run high.
Where You Go From Here
During this New Moon in Cancer I want you to ask yourself “what does safety and security mean to you”?
What does it look like to be at home with yourself and amongst others? Conversely what are the boundaries that must be upheld in order to protect your peace? And what does it mean to support and be supported by your friends, family, romantic partners, and community?
These are all the questions I want you to ask yourself during this dark moon ripe with new potential, because Cancer energy is a master at both giving and receiving nourishment through empathy, vulnerability, and yes, boundaries too, which are a part of this delicate dance that allow us to soften into a place where we are allowed to feel safe with others and ourselves.
So allow the waves of this lunation to wash over you to clear away any numbness or cynicism that may have crept into your heart, let it all wash over you, again, and again, and again, as many times as needed like tides pulling out and rushing back in.
Sincerely the New Moon in Cancer.
Till Next Time, Mythical One,
Ayame (あやめ
